Impounded Car Insurance

Why the missing MOT matters

Your car is in the pound and it does not have a valid MOT, which means it cannot normally be driven legally on the road. Even if the seizure was for a different reason, most pounds will not allow a vehicle to be driven away unless it is roadworthy and meets legal requirements.

That leaves two main routes: arranging a lawful way to drive it directly to a pre-booked MOT test, or removing it without driving it at all.

Driving to a pre-booked MOT test

UK rules normally allow a vehicle without an MOT to be driven directly to a pre-booked test appointment. However, the booking must be genuine and the vehicle must still be insured. Pounds may ask for proof of the MOT booking before allowing release.

It is sensible to confirm with the pound that they will accept this arrangement before attending, as procedures can vary between locations.

Insurance is still required

Even when driving directly to a test, suitable insurance must usually be in place before the vehicle is released. Some policies may not be accepted for impounded vehicles, so checking that the cover arranged meets release requirements is important.

The policy must normally be active at the time of collection and correctly reflect the vehicle and driver details.

If the vehicle is not roadworthy

Where the car is not safe to drive, or if there are doubts about its condition, it cannot legally be driven even to an MOT test. In those cases, collection using a specialist vehicle recovery company is usually the safer option.

Recovery can be expensive and may take time to arrange, so early planning helps prevent daily storage charges from increasing unnecessarily.

Documents the pound may request

  • Photo identification for the person collecting the vehicle.
  • Proof of keeper status or authority to collect.
  • Evidence of suitable insurance cover.
  • Confirmation of a pre-booked MOT test if intending to drive to one.
  • Payment of removal and storage charges.

Checking exactly what is required before attending can help avoid repeat visits.

Deadlines and costs

Removal fees and daily storage charges normally apply until the vehicle is released. Pounds also operate collection deadlines. If the vehicle is not claimed within the permitted timeframe, disposal proceedings may begin.

Acting quickly, arranging either an MOT booking or recovery, and ensuring insurance is suitable usually provides the most direct route to getting the car back.
